The human body must have the oxygen, the water, and the food necessaries to
maintain the life processes. When any of these are in short supply, compelling
carvings develop in the form of air hunger, thirst, an hunger for food. Many
people have cultivated carvings in addition to these three basic ones. And these
additional carvings may be for substances definitely harmful for the body. We
refer particularly to the wide spread addiction of to tobacco and alcohol. In
the individual case these indulgences generally begin by experimentation with
popular custom. Then a habit is formed which, in many cases, so strong to defy
personal control.
SMOKING:
Smoking has just become a common habit or I can easily recall it a fashion of
today. Young boys specially consider it a very well personal quality or a part
of one's smartness. Not only it has just become a fashion, but a large number of
people smoke today to get rid of tension .Mostly drug users are seen smoking
Cigarettes very commonly on road sides. Among Europeans the smoking of tobacco
dates from the time Columbus
discovered the New World and found Indians inhaling the smoke from
burning tobacco. Intrigued by the custom, he and his men adopted it themselves,
and introduced it into the Europe.
The smoking of cigarette is a relatively recent innovation, having developed for
the most part since World War I. Just why smoking tobacco appealed human beings
in the first place is hard to say. Some suggest that possibly the tranquilizing
and euphoric played a part. Looking at the matter philosophically, we can see
the custom of drawing smoke from burning embers held near the lips seems
unwarranted. Customs of society, however, put considerable social pressure on
the average teen-age to adopt the habit.
SMOKING SHORTENS LIFE:
One shocking news for every one was that smoking tobacco shortens life. A
significant statement from a renowned and trustable book published by Royal
College Of Physicians of London, was that "The chance of dying in the next ten
years for amen aged thirty five who is a heavy cigarette smoker is 1 in
23 where as the risk for a nonsmoker is only 1 in 90. Only 35 percent (1 in 6)
of men of this age who are nonsmokers but 33 percent (1 in 3) of heavy
smokers will die before the age of 65.
LUNG CANCER:
In the 1940's physician became alarmed over the phenomenal increase in lung
cancer cases. the disease showed up more often among men than among women. It
was proving to be a tragic disease, with cancer frequently well established in
the lungs, and even in other tissues outside the lungs, by the time it was
recognized. Then, as now, the disease carried a high death rate, even after
surgical treatment. In comparison with nonsmokers, average male smokers of
cigarette have approximately a 9-to-10fold risk of developing lung cancer and
heavy smokers at least a 20-fold risk.
MORE DEATHS FROM OTHER CAUSES:
The early
emphasis placed on the relationship between cigarette smoking and
lung cancer, pointed out so clearly during the early 1950's, caused public
to assume, falsely, that lung cancer is only serious consequence of
smoking. It became common knowledge that one smoker out of ten , if he lived
long enough continued , would die of lung cancer. Cigarette smoking
predisposes to many diseases. It has greatly the number of deaths from
heart disease. The added number of heart victims is three times as great as
the total who die from cancer. Chronic bronchitis is largely caused and
aggravated by smoking. Emphysema, asthma, cancer of the larynx, cancer of the
other parts of the body, diseases of digestive organs, and disease of the eye
are in the list of ailments caused or made worse by smoking.
SOLUTION OF THIS DISEASE FOR A COMMON
MAN IN A COMMON WAY :
I think the most simple solution for protecting yourself from such harmful
diseases is that keep away yourself from the menace of smoking .If you
really aware of such harms caused by it than you are a fool, if you are
still continuing it. Just kick it away from your life. If you have a habit
of it than try to quit it .I think the following will help you in quitting
the worse habit of smoking.
DOES QUITTING HELP?
Studies of ex-smokers indicate that their prospect of serious from smoking
declines gradually after they quit. Notice that in the accompanying chart it
is demonstrated that the mortality rate drops significantly beyond the first
year. Prospects are best for those who have smoked less than a pack a day. But
even those who have smoked more than a pack a day benefit by breaking the
habit.
HOW TO QUIT?
Even within the first two or three weeks after quitting, the ex-smoker will
notice that he can think more clearly, that he coughs less, that he sleeps
better, and that he derives more pleasure from the taste of food and the
fragrance of flowers.
The first thing to do when you plan to quit is to set a date (not too far in
the future) when the new program is to begin. Choose a time when there will
be minimum of and nervous tension. Once this beginning date is selected, begin
the countdown by saying, "five more days"(or whatever it is)"and I will be
free from this noxious habit". Announce the deadline to family members and
friends and brag about your determination to quit.
It may not be as hard to abstain from smoking for the first few hours
as you had supposed. But the time will come when the craving for a smoke will
threaten to overpower you. Perhaps some little irritation will stir it
up. There is danger of being caught off guard when a friend offers you a
cigarette or taunts you for being a quitter. At such a time you need to stand
off and watch yourself in operation, as it were, just as a parent would
observe an unruly child.
The first week is the hardest. After you have held out this long, you can
begin to tell yourself that it would be foolish to back up now.
One trick that helps when the urge is strong is to practice regular, rhythmic
breathing at the rate of about sixteen times a minute. Don’t breathe too
deeply, for this might make you dizzy.
Victory over smoking offers abundant revords. As an ex-smoker
achieves success, He feels courageous and his self-respect rises. Here in
lies the secret of his continue self-mastery.
LAST WORDS:
At the end I just want to say that please save you or of all who does
such thing before its too late .We are all human beings and it’s our duty to
take care of our beloved ones. I hope it would help you a little bit in
understanding the serious matter.
